The Punjab government has approved new fines targeting individuals and businesses found littering, as part of the province’s growing cleanliness drive.
The decision was finalized during a meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, where officials reviewed progress on the Suthra Punjab initiative.
Officials briefed the chief minister that public response to the program has been encouraging, with vehicle-tracking systems and live monitoring of waste containers already helping improve supervision and reporting across multiple districts.
CM Maryam Nawaz praised the scale of the effort, noting that the province began from scratch and has steadily improved its waste-management structure. She added that a comprehensive framework for both urban and rural areas should have been implemented long ago.
Under the new enforcement strategy, commercial units and any individuals seen dumping waste on roads will face penalties and immediate action.
The government also announced plans to shift sanitation trucks and machinery toward environmentally friendly electric vehicles, along with launching waste-to-energy projects aimed at converting garbage into usable power.
The chief minister instructed relevant departments to present a detailed roadmap for the waste-to-value plan by mid-January.
