PTA Launches Crackdown on Illegal IoT Networks Across Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has begun an extensive enforcement drive against illegal LoRaWAN networks, declaring all unlicensed devices and their operations unlawful across the country.

LoRaWAN is a low-power, long-range wireless protocol used to connect Internet of Things (IoT) devices over large areas.

🛑 Nationwide action underway

PTA said the crackdown is intended to protect Pakistan’s growing IoT sector from potential security and spectrum risks. Teams have already started taking action against companies and individuals importing, selling, or installing LoRaWAN hardware without authorization.

Officials confirmed that offices have been sealed, devices confiscated, and multiple arrests have been made during the ongoing campaign.

⚠️ Why PTA is acting

According to the regulator, unapproved LoRaWAN technology can cause harmful interference in Pakistan’s national radio spectrum and disrupt sensitive communication networks. This interference, PTA warned, can threaten digital infrastructure projects and delay the rollout of secure IoT services in multiple sectors.

The authority emphasized that only certified and licensed LoRaWAN equipment can be used legally in Pakistan. It said non-certified devices weaken compliance mechanisms required for national technology programs.

📢 Public cooperation requested

PTA has urged citizens to purchase IoT equipment only from authorized sellers and avoid unregistered LoRaWAN devices. People have also been asked to report illegal installations, sales, or imports.

LoRaWAN is widely used in:

  • Smart farming

  • Industrial monitoring

  • Smart meters

  • Vehicle tracking

PTA concluded that the technology remains valuable, but secure, licensed hardware is essential to ensure uninterrupted IoT operations nationwide.
