Saudi Arabia has approved a high-speed electric train project that will directly connect Saudi Arabia and Qatar, marking a major milestone in regional connectivity and Gulf integration. The approval was granted during a Saudi Cabinet meeting chaired by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in Riyadh, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Officials described the cross-border railway as a transformational infrastructure project aimed at strengthening transport links, boosting tourism, and accelerating economic activity between the two Gulf nations.
Key Details of the Rail Project
The proposed 785-kilometer high-speed rail line will connect Riyadh and Doha, reducing travel time between the two capitals to around two hours. The railway is scheduled to begin operations in June 2026, making it one of the fastest intercity rail links in the Middle East.
Ministers said the project is expected to become one of the most significant development initiatives in the Gulf region, providing a modern, efficient alternative to air and road travel.
Economic and Tourism Boost
Saudi officials highlighted that the rail link will support tourism growth, facilitate business travel, and enhance cross-border trade. The project is also expected to improve mobility for residents and visitors, especially during major regional events.
