Air Pollution Crisis: Punjab Imposes Strict Ban on BBQ Wood Fires

The Punjab government has imposed a complete ban on the use of wood and charcoal at BBQ restaurants and hotels across the province in an effort to curb rising air pollution and smog.

All eateries have been given 15 days to install smoke control systems and suction hoods or face legal action under environmental protection laws.

🛑 Crackdown Begins Across Punjab

According to the official notification issued Wednesday, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) have started joint inspections to ensure compliance.

“There is no room for smoke-emitting restaurants in Punjab,” said EPA Director General Imran Hamid Sheikh. “Those who fail to install suction systems within 15 days will face strict action.”

Deputy commissioners across all districts have been tasked with supervising the enforcement campaign.

🌍 Part of Punjab’s Smog Prevention Plan

The move is part of Punjab’s expanded smog control strategy ahead of winter.
EPA teams are also conducting emission checks on industries, vehicles, and waste-burning sites to reduce harmful particulates in the air.

According to the EPA’s latest eight-hour air quality report, the average AQI across Punjab stood at 164, which is classified as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.”

  • Gujranwala: AQI 239

  • Kasur: AQI 209

  • Lahore: AQI 206

  • Faisalabad, Narowal, Hafizabad: AQI above 170

Officials warned that air pollution levels are likely to rise further as winter approaches.
