Residents of Dubai and Sharjah may soon see electric tuk-tuks zipping through the streets, as Chinese company Green Power GCC seeks RTA approval to introduce its three-wheeled solar-powered rickshaws in the UAE.
Already popular in Egypt, Thailand, and India, these vehicles are being pitched as a low-cost, zero-emission alternative for public transport and private venues.
“Hotels and resorts could use them as eco-friendly shuttles instead of golf carts,” said Ahmed Tauseef, Sales Executive at Green Power, during the Evolve Future Mobility Show in Dubai.
☀️ Dual-Powered & Low Maintenance
Each electric tuk-tuk operates on both solar and electric power.
Solar panels on the roof charge onboard batteries, while an electric motor powers the vehicle — delivering up to 500 km range per full solar charge.
The rickshaws also feature standard charging ports, swappable batteries, and home-charging capability.
According to Green Power, prices start at Dh 8,000, with minimal maintenance costs.
Currently, six units have been imported for trial runs pending final approval from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
🌿 Supporting UAE’s Green Transport Vision
The project aligns with the UAE’s National Electric Vehicles Policy, which aims to reduce energy consumption in the transport sector by 20% and ensure half of all vehicles are electric by 2050.
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure’s Global EV Market Initiative (2023) is also accelerating efforts to attract clean-mobility investors and manufacturers to the region.
