Pakistan has received a major donation of Hepatitis C medicines from Egypt, marking another milestone in the Prime Minister’s Programme for the Elimination of Hepatitis C — a national effort to fight one of the country’s most prevalent liver diseases.

To mark the arrival of the shipment, the Ministry of Health held a ceremony in Islamabad attended by Yara Albdewy, Deputy Chief of Mission of Egypt, and Dr Dapeng Luo, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Pakistan.

Federal Minister for Health Mustafa Kamal thanked Egypt for its “generous and timely contribution,” calling it a symbol of enduring friendship and solidarity between the two nations.

“Egypt’s support reflects the strength of our partnership and shared vision for a healthier future,” the minister said, adding that the donation would help expand free treatment access across Pakistan.

He also appreciated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and WHO for their role in coordinating the shipment and ensuring smooth delivery of the life-saving medicines.

Minister Kamal praised Egypt’s remarkable success in eliminating Hepatitis C — once among the highest in the world — noting that Pakistan aims to replicate its large-scale screening and treatment model under the Prime Minister’s national programme.

Egypt’s global reputation for effective public health campaigns and cost-efficient medicine production has made it a leading contributor to international Hepatitis C control initiatives.

Officials said the donation will accelerate Pakistan’s goal of eliminating Hepatitis C as a public health threat, expanding access to free treatment at both federal and provincial levels.
