Karachi Expands E-Challan System — New Traffic Rule Coming Soon

Commissioner Karachi Hassan Naqvi has approved a series of new initiatives aimed at reducing congestion in key areas of the city, including a major expansion of the E-Challan system.

He issued the directives while presiding over a high-level meeting on traffic management, attended by DIG Traffic Pir Mohammad Shah, the Municipal Commissioner of KMC, deputy commissioners, and other senior officials.

During the briefing, DIG Traffic informed the meeting that plans have been finalized to issue E-Challan notices for illegal parking. Authorities say improper parking remains one of the leading causes of gridlock in multiple commercial districts of Karachi.

Officials also discussed the current state of pedestrian bridges. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation reported that the first phase of rehabilitation has begun, with repairs underway on 20 pedestrian bridges. Priority is being given to structures considered unsafe or at risk.

The meeting further addressed concerns related to roadside encroachments, poor basement parking management in commercial buildings, and traffic generated by major shopping malls.

The Deputy Commissioner South stated that encroachments have already been removed from basement parking areas in 22 commercial buildings in Saddar. Opening these spaces for proper vehicle parking has helped ease traffic in adjoining streets.
