Pakistan is moving closer to the launch of 5G technology, as the federal cabinet is expected to approve the 5G spectrum auction today. The long-awaited decision will pave the way for the next phase of the country’s digital transformation.
According to official sources, auction recommendations, including the auction model and minimum pricing, have already been submitted to the cabinet for approval. Once cleared, the final framework for the auction will be formally announced.
Key Details of the 5G Spectrum Auction
Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima confirmed that major decisions related to the auction will be finalized after cabinet approval. She said the official information memorandum will be released immediately afterward, allowing telecom operators to prepare for participation.
Authorities stated that six frequency bands, totaling 600 MHz of spectrum, will be offered. Telecom companies are expected to be given 40 to 45 days to submit bids after the release of the auction documents.
The auction is scheduled to be completed before February 15 and will be conducted in an open and transparent manner, with media presence during the bidding process.
Frequency Bands and Industry Participation
The spectrum bands up for auction include:
-
2600 MHz (194 MHz of prime spectrum)
-
700 MHz
-
1800 MHz
-
2100 MHz
-
2300 MHz
-
3500 MHz
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will prioritize the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands, with plans to sell more than 300 MHz in total. Experts believe at least 100 MHz of spectrum is required to deliver effective 5G services.
Pakistan’s three major mobile operators are expected to participate, while foreign companies will also be eligible to bid. Separate base prices will be set for each band to ensure fair competition and attract investment.
5G Launch Timeline and Impact
Sources say 5G services are expected to launch in 2026, initially in major cities including Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. Internet quality targets are planned to increase from 4 Mbps in the first year to 25 Mbps over time.
The rollout will also include the annual installation of new mobile towers and the fiberization of existing infrastructure, significantly strengthening Pakistan’s digital backbone.
Officials believe the introduction of 5G will boost connectivity, innovation, and economic growth, particularly in sectors such as IT, fintech, e-commerce, and smart services.
