Punjab has introduced a revised distribution formula for its upcoming electric taxi scheme, marking the first time female drivers will receive a dedicated share of environmentally friendly EV taxis.
Under the new plan, 100 electric vehicles will be allotted to women through a ballot, while 200 EVs will go to male taxi drivers. Officials say the updated structure aims to open new employment avenues for women who want to enter the transport sector.
In addition to the individual allotments, the Punjab government will provide 800 electric vehicles to corporate taxi operators, as part of a broader initiative to modernize commercial transport. Previously, 100 EVs were reserved exclusively for individual citizens, but the structure has now been adjusted to allocate a portion to female drivers.
Authorities also confirmed that the earlier proposal to distribute 1,000 interest-free vehicles to commercial corporate drivers remains part of the overall plan.
Punjab’s Provincial Transport Minister said the revised formula ensures that women are not left out of economic opportunities in the transport sector. By allocating vehicles directly to female drivers, officials believe the program will support safer mobility options while expanding women-led employment across the province.
