Smart Meter Prices Slashed as Govt Launches Nationwide Rollout

The Ministry of Energy has officially launched a nationwide rollout of smart electricity meters, marking a major step toward digitalizing Pakistan’s power sector and improving customer service across the country.

Smart Meter Prices Slashed as Govt Launches Nationwide Rollout

According to a ministry spokesperson, the move is part of the government’s 2025–26 customer service improvement drive aimed at modernizing distribution systems, improving billing accuracy, and building public trust in power companies.

💸 Smart Meter Prices Reduced

The government confirmed that the price of smart meters has been cut from around Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 15,000 per single-phase unit, following strict procurement reforms and competitive market engagement.

“Cost reduction has unlocked the program,” the ministry stated, noting that efficient tendering and open competition led to substantial savings.

⚡ Key Benefits of Smart Meters

  • End of manual meter reading — remote automation will eliminate human error and reduce overbilling.

  • Real-time usage tracking via mobile apps, allowing consumers to manage consumption and control bills.

  • Improved transparency and dispute resolution between consumers and distribution companies (DISCOs).

  • Operational savings: Replacing 5 million meters per year could save Rs. 25 billion annually, according to government estimates.

📊 Scale of Rollout

Around 80% of Pakistan’s 38 million electricity consumers use single-phase meters. The initial phase of the rollout will prioritize urban and high-loss areas, followed by gradual expansion to smaller towns and rural regions.

The ministry expects prices to decline further through global competitive bidding, making advanced metering technology more affordable and accessible nationwide.

💬 Official Statement

Officials described the smart metering initiative as a “major milestone in Pakistan’s energy digitalization journey”, adding that it will improve billing accuracy, customer trust, and efficiency in power distribution networks.

🧩 Background

The government’s accelerated focus on smart grid technology aligns with Pakistan’s broader digital transformation goals. The move follows the National Electricity Policy’s emphasis on smart systems to curb losses, promote accountability, and modernize infrastructure.
