Indian football is facing a serious crisis as City Football Group (CFG), the global conglomerate behind Manchester City, has decided to exit Mumbai City FC. The move comes amid growing uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League (ISL) and the domestic football ecosystem.
The 2025–26 ISL season has been delayed by over three months, with no confirmed start date or league calendar. This lack of clarity over scheduling, commercial direction, and governance has created instability for clubs, players, and coaches alike.
Domestic Football Structure at Standstill
In addition to ISL delays, the I-League and I-League 2 remain suspended, leaving the domestic football structure completely inactive. Mumbai City FC have formally informed the All India Football Federation (AIFF) about a change in ownership. Once CFG completes its exit, the club will return to full ownership under actor Ranbir Kapoor and businessman Bimal Parekh.
Financial Pressures on Indian Clubs
Indian football clubs are under severe financial strain. The AIFF currently has Rs. 19.89 crore in its account but plans to spend Rs. 50.48 crore between January and May 2026. Even after factoring in a projected surplus of Rs. 9.44 crore, the federation is expected to face a deficit of Rs. 23.11 crore by May 31, 2026.
The expiration of the Master Rights Agreement has further cut off a major source of revenue, leaving clubs struggling to maintain operations. Both domestic and foreign players and staff have expressed frustration over the prolonged uncertainty.
Impact on Indian Football’s Future
With the ISL start date still unclear and investor confidence weakening, CFG’s withdrawal raises serious questions about the future of Indian football. Analysts warn that if structural and financial issues are not addressed, other clubs could face similar crises, potentially affecting India’s overall football growth and international competitiveness.
The situation highlights the urgent need for transparent governance, sustainable finances, and clear scheduling to restore confidence among investors, players, and fans.
