The federal government has officially declared Friday, December 26, a public holiday for federal offices located in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), reversing an earlier decision that had sparked confusion and criticism.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on December 25, all federal government offices, including the Pakistan Secretariat and other federal establishments operating within ICT, will remain closed on December 26.
Earlier Clarification Withdrawn
The latest notification supersedes a clarification issued on December 24, in which the Cabinet Division had declared December 26 a working day for the federal government and its institutions. That clarification had overturned expectations of an extended break following December 25, which is observed as Quaid-e-Azam Day and Christmas.
The sudden change led to strong public reaction, particularly from government employees who had already planned travel or leave arrangements. The revised decision now formally nullifies the earlier clarification.
Essential Services to Remain Operational
While most federal offices will remain closed, the government has clarified that essential services will continue to function as usual. These include:
-
Hospitals
-
Banks
-
Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI)
-
Capital Development Authority (CDA)
-
ICT Administration
-
ICT Police
-
IESCO
-
SNGPL
These departments will remain operational to ensure uninterrupted public services.
Order to Be Widely Publicized
The Cabinet Division has directed that the notification be given wide publicity through print and electronic media, ensuring that both government employees and the general public are fully informed of the updated decision.
The episode highlights how administrative decisions can quickly come under scrutiny, especially during public holidays, and reflects the government’s responsiveness to widespread feedback.
