Islamabad’s administration is preparing to implement a mandatory e-tag system for all vehicles entering or travelling inside the capital. The new mechanism aims to clearly identify residents, daily commuters, and visitors from other cities.
According to officials, vehicles that already have a motorway M-Tag will not need a separate e-tag, as both systems are being integrated.
What About Motorcyclists?
In the first phase, e-tags are being issued only for vehicles, while motorcyclists will receive their required M-Tags in the next stage.
Once the system is fully activated, both e-tags and M-Tags will become mandatory for all vehicles entering Islamabad, including bikes.
Why Is the Tag System Being Introduced?
Authorities say the new tagging system will help them:
-
Identify vehicles more accurately
-
Prevent the use of fake number plates
-
Distinguish between Islamabad residents and daily commuters
-
Improve traffic monitoring and security
Fake or duplicate e-tags won’t work because they cannot be read by the system, and each tag will contain verified data of the vehicle and its owner.
Where Are Tags Being Issued?
A pilot project has already started.
E-tags are available at:
-
Kachnar Park (I-8)
-
Excise Office (H-8)
The Frontier Works Organisation continues to issue M-Tags for the motorway. From November 18, e-tag issuance will expand across more locations in the city.
The tag is expected to cost around Rs. 250.
To get a tag, motorists must show:
-
Original CNIC
-
Original vehicle registration documents
