A fake PTA notification is circulating across social platforms, falsely claiming that the telecom regulator has instructed group admins on WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and other services to remove all foreign members on “data security” grounds.
The document — labeled as a PTA directive — is unauthentic and should be disregarded, according to an official statement from the regulator.
PTA confirmed through its verified X (Twitter) account that no such order has been issued. The authority advised users not to share unverified content and to rely only on official PTA communication channels for accurate information.
The fake notice even attempts to threaten legal action, claiming penalties under Section 21 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016, including fines and possible imprisonment — all of which is entirely fabricated.
PTA has reassured citizens that no action will be taken against individuals or group admins for having foreign participants in their chats, groups, or online communities. The viral message has no legal standing and carries no official authority.
Users are encouraged to avoid spreading the image and to verify all PTA-related claims before sharing them online.
